pto will stop while bush hogging some times

HI:
I'M NEW WITH MY 1950 8N FORD AND BUSH HOGGING.
SOME TIMES MY BUSH HOG WILL STOP TURNING WHILE I'M HOGGING MY FIELD,WHEN I NOTICE IT, I STOP AND RE-ENGAGE MY PTO SHIFTER AND GO ON, IS THIS COMMON? I WOULD LIKE INFORMATION ONTHIS IF YOU HAVE ANY. THANK YOU.

Gears are worn you may need to open it up and replace any and all worn parts on the PTO.

NO gears involved in the PTO, just a shift collar.

The most common reason for the PTO popping "out of gear" is a loose rear PTO shaft bearing that lets the shaft "walk" back and forth, eventually sliding the collar out of engagement.

Key # 2 is the drive spline, Key #6 is the shift collar that slides over it to engage the PTO.

A worn detent in the shift rail, Key #7 or spring # 19, or ball # 20 being damaged can make it latch poorly, as well.

Well, shoot yea! My wife is a Clemson, excuse me "ClemPson" grad. I live about 20 miles south of Greenville. I remeber the tiger paws on the exit and along 76 when I was a kid. Dont get that way much, even though my Mom lives in Anderson, I usually come 76 to Anderson from Hickory Tavern.

Hey guys that was a great explanation and picture--- I am familier w/ the prov. but that is a great way to explain it-- nice area SC I am looking to rent or buy something in NC or SC for the winter months or for that matter all year-- getting to old for the winters up here in upstate NY chatham area ??? know of anything
