Pull starting what gear?

On the pulled tractor, that is, should I be using a higher or lower gear? Pulling tractor obviously needs to be in a gear where it can comfortably pull the load...

the pulling tractor dont need to be in a fast gear for pulling . 2nd gear is plenty good. the pulled tractor use high gear.

The lowest gear that you can pull it without the tires sliding. High gear will turn the engine over but slowly.

High gear. If the tractor won't start in the highest or second highest gear, something is seriously wrong. Wheels will just skid if the gear is too low.

A tractor starter doesn’t spin the engine over very fast, and a engine that is in decent shape should pop off with just a few turns, even slow revolutions. You can’t get much speed turning a crank, but tractors that came with cranks could easily be started by hand. Put the tractor to be started in road gear, and dump the clutch after you get rolling.

Here's how it works:

The lower the gear, the faster the engine turns, but the harder it is to get it turning.
The higher the gear, the slower the engine turns, but the easier it is to get turning.

I personally recommend whatever gear you rake hay in, the fastest "field" gear the tractor has. In road gear the tractor could fire up and take off, ramming into the pulling tractor, if you're not quick on the clutch. A lower/slower gear gives you more time to react.

Note that this only works on a mechanically geared tractor, straight 3-4-5-6 speeds, no TA (with exceptions), no Mulitpower, no DualPower, no Hydraul-shift, no powershifts. Those all need hydraulic pressure to engage. Without pressure the tractor just freewheels.

Don't know about the others but Dual Power can be tow started no problem

Back when I was a kid and working on autos, we used a high gear as we lived on gravel roads and low gear would lock up the wheels with the poor traction experienced with gravel. Had we been on blacktop, probably would have moved down to a mid gear. Course the towing device capability plays into that too and weak tower means higher gear.

The hydro-power/hydraul-shift unts can be tow started with no problems no matter what position the shift lever is in.

The Oliver hydro/hyraul-shift units have their own pump and oil supply. The instant the rear wheels turn the unit pumps oil. When the engine shuts down the unit ends up in the direct mode no matter where the shift lever is.

No, not either, just one or the other. I don't remember which but one range is held by hydraulic pressure and the other by a big spring. There is no neutral position. As soon as the engine is shut off the springs push to engage the I believe the high drive.

It's been many yrs since I owned a 5610 that had dual-power. I sure thought if it was parked on un-level ground in gear without locking brake pedals down that this tractor would roll down incline.

Ok I stand corrected. Apparently dual-power and hydraul-shift work similar to spring brakes on a heavy duty truck and lock into a default position when there is loss of hydraulic pressure.

Repair the starting system rather than pull starting .
