Pull type grader

Does anybody have a pull type grader how hard does it pull I was thinking about getting one that would double as a yard ornament and grade are 1/4 mile long drive way they go for scrape price around here how big of one would I want for a 4-6 thousand pound tractor

Depends a lot on how much you cut- light cleanup and trimming doesn't take much power, cut too much at once and you might suddenly stop. Early ones were horse-drawn. This is "Old Paint", my favorite. And sneaking up on the paving crew- 3,2,1 AIR HORNS lol.

Had one years ago. It took 2 people to run. One on the grader and one on the tractor. We pulled it behind our Ford 841S

There were different sizes of the tow-behinds, bigger takes more power to pull

We used to pull ours with an H it would slide sideways if you tried to take to big of a bite on hard ground. Still would in soft but still would slide sideways. H would pull all it would cut usually .

My Uncle had one that was originally horse drawn that my Grandpa bought from the township. We pulled it with a John Deere G, me on the tractor and my Uncle running the control wheels and rods. Didn’t work real well on the hard packed, crushed limestone driveway but did a prett decent job on the cow lane.

One trick to make it cut n pack better is to soak it down and do your cut n fill before it dries out

That is why countries tend to try to wait for a rain before they grade the roads. Over the years I worked to many road jobs and help fix/repair/replace roads in this area.

You don't say what 4/6,000 lb tractor, but if it has a 3 point and other than yard art value, a 6' or 7' box blade would be a lot handier. If you do get one, look at it closely, a plum wore out scraper isn't anything more than yard art.

Remember the old ones were designed to bepulled by a team of horses

I operated one of those for my grandfather when I was a young teenager, it was quite a job to raise and lower the blade. He pulled it with an F12. Some guys came in the winter to use it to plow snow, They couldn't even get to it with their 8N Ford in the snow

I have a small home built grader with 14" rubber tires on the back using Rambler spindles. Backbone is 6" thick wall pipe. It has 2 cylinders, 1 rotates blade and 1 tips blade attached to pipe backbone at the rear wheels. 3 pt raises front to lift blade off the ground. Has 8' wide blade. I plow where I want a farm road bed, 4 passes with a 3 btm plow, plowed up together with ditches both sides, crown and smooth with grader, then maintain with grader. I pull it with a 454 IH....James
