hey how much coolant does this tractor really take? and as far as a thermostat is it better to run 180 degree or 160? looking for opinions

160 is the standard, available everywhere. it takes several gallons (3?) but the tip is to only fill just above the core.

Quazar........while summtimes you can find 180* thermostats, be satisfied with the 160* stat. Pointy end towards the radiator.

I use about 2-gals of 50/50 anti-freeze. Most of the time you can't drain the gal of anti-freeze innna the block. Donnna worry, just keep the core covered. Simple, eh? .......Dell

There is nothing wrong with a 180 degree thermostat but a 160 degree will do just fine. I have a 160 degree in my 1949 8N which also has a temperature gage. In winter pushing snow I need to block off part of the radiator to get the engine temperature above 160 degrees. In the summer cutting grass the temperature goes up to about 190 degrees.

wierd question... just realized the tractor did not have a thermostat on it before i tore it down.. where is it to be located? any harm in no thermostat?

Quazar, you want a thermostat. The engine heats up quicker which helps reduce sludge in the oil and it prevents hot/cold spots in the block.

Thermostat is located in the top radiator hose - I use dish soap to help slide it into place. You may want to put a tywrap around the outside to prevent it creeping up toward the radiator. As Dell stated, the pointy end of the t-stat goes toward the radiator.
