pulling a 4430

i bought a 4430 that i want to take to a couple of tractor pulls. i'm not looking for anything hard core since its a cab tractor. i don't have the money to buy a 466 engine, but does anyone have any good idea's on how i can get some horse power out of this tractor? does any one know how to get a bigger turbo on this thing? i know alot of john deere's have the same manifold. thanks for the help.

Get a 55 series intake and exhaust manifold and turbo. bigger ports and flows better. you will have to change your upper water manifold to clear the turbo, but thats easy. than turn your injection pump up. after a couple of pulls you'll find out if your clutch is any good!

i will check into the that manifold and turbo. i put an intercooler on it off a 4640. is there a difference in size between a turbo off a 4255 and a 4955? i see them listed on the internet that the same turbo fits all the 55 series tractors. my tractor is an 8 speed powershift. i have the pressure turned way up in it. i know it will hold.

i can't honestly tell you what the pressure is set at. my dad reworked my clutch and "fixed" the oil flow, and turned the pump up in it. i was working away when he split it. it was some trick that he learned at john deere school. that set up worked great in my uncle's pulling tractor. he could burn 32" wide rubber in 7th gear. his tractor has a 466 in it. everytime i ask about getting hp out of my tractor they tell me, the 404 won't take it. i don't think they understand i don't need 500 hp, i just want it to run good.

Oil filter housing bolt will handle 250-275psi before is streches and breaks. Split it and put 4840 springs in the clutch plate that will keep it from slipping there. Get rid of the inner cooler. 55 series intake isn't going to help unless you have the head to match. You arn't flowing enough air to worry about 55 series exhaust yet. Go with a holset hx 50 with a 19 housing would be a good place to start. Get rid of the aneroid on top of the pump and put a small cover over the hole. Turn the pump screw in until there is about 1 1/2 threads left before the nut, if you go any farther you are going to hit the retard notch. The best way to make the power shift hold is to get in a gear and stay there. If you start shifting down it won't last. That set up should get you about 350-400hp

You can do some pump and injector work. I think if there is no turbo limit run the holset as mentioned below. A s300 off of a 6081 john deere engine would work as well, but you will have to have the front half of the 55 series manifold for it to bolt up. You will have to also rework the water manifold, as mentioned below. Not sure on the powershift, there was one pulled around here and all it would run is 7th gear. I think they are different than a regular perma-clutch. If im not mistaken, they are just a single disk clutch, not even sure if they're wet. Do you run speed limit classes? What weight are you going to pull? Any rpm limitations?

Go to youtube and search "John Deere 4630 Pulling" should show up with one in Bedford ONT, that 46 is an 8 speed and holds up ok, but I would say it is the limit. 4010 puller you are right power shift is dry with no disconnect, just a place to for it to slip if needed.

i don't want to pull any pace classes. i will be pulling from 11,500-15,500. there is only 4 local fairs around here that i will probably go to. there are no hot stock classes around here that pull above 10,500. so thats out. 3000 rpm's are the limit. so i have to stay kinda mild. my uncles 4430, he would start in 4th or 5th gear and shift up through 6th or 7th. down shifting i was warned is not an option. here is a picture of his tractor back in the day.

thanks, i am going to check out that video and that turbo. why no inner cooler though? i see a lot of farmers who add them just for some extra horses?

Are those rear tires 24.5-32 or 30.5-32? Id say he didnt spin a whole lot as he probably got all of the power to the ground with those. Figure anything out on turbo size yet?

What do you think you can run? I"m pulling a 4430 and it seems to like the 8-10 mph class (its had a little work done to it) but thats 10,000-12,500. 14000-15000 is quite a bit more weight especially on that tranny/clutch. Id say if you can run 6th or 7th gear all the time in those classes youd be doing pretty good.

What are you running for tires? I think if doing over again id just start out with 20.8-38 on widened rims. That will keep your ground speed up due to their heighth.

those tires are 30.5 32. that was in 1991 in the 12,500 class. i don't think i can get my tractor down to 10,000. pulling rules around here have changed alot since then. so i am looking for a 55 series manifold and turbo from a 4960 or 4955. someone told me those 2 turbo's are the same as the a 4455. i am also looking in to the turbo off a 6081 as mentioned below. the biggest tires you can use here is 20.8. i got a set of firestones that have a little under half tread on them. i am fully restoring it and cannot wait to play with it. my first stop will be plow days just down the road. the only class i can pull is farm stock. so i can't get to carried away. i would love to pull hot stock, but around here they only pull 95-10,500 classes. tractor pulling almost died off around here, but its picking up now. maybe next year when i get a 466 engine, i will be able to skin some of those red tracotrs.

The intercooler allows the engine to make more HP before failure by lowering the exhaust temp. Compared to the same engine using the same amount of air and fuel without an intercooler.
After market air to air intercoolers work better than the JD intake manifold intercooler tinkeration.
Is water injection allowed? I assume you are installing a EGT gauge so you know to back off before engine componets turn white hot, go soft and fail.

i didn't install one of those gauges. you right though, i better. i'm not sure what the rules are around here for running water injection. these fair rules are all diffrent and no very clear.

Currently, Im running 18.4-34 but am currently stepping up to 18.4-38. The reason for running these and not 20.8"s is because I bought the tires/wheels as a package deal.

Jason, what size turbo is on the 4960 or 4455? Ive got a 3lm-33 on mine now that is about to come off so I can install the larger 3lm. I bought it as a reman and it only has 10 runs on it. It measures like 2" on the intake and 2.5 on exhaust. I would sell if u are interested.

Are u planning on doing any head work or installing larger injectors or pump? Or are u just going to increase rpms and increase fuel rate? Ive been told advancing timing helps but havent played with mine yet, dont know how far to go, Ive heard anything from 12*-32*.

i will have to measure the turbo i have now and see what size it is. it is a little bigger than the one i took off. i had my pump done by wimers. nothing crazy though because i want to use my tractor for plowing and just tinkering around also with out burning a ton of fuel. i did go with a diffrent tip on my injectors too. i am going to fire it up today and see how it runs. the 4960 turbo measures handy to 4" across the intake. i will ask a bunch of questions today about the timing and see if i can get any advice about that out of my uncle.

What water manifold do you use when you change the exhaust manifolds
to the 55 series on a 4430??
