Pulling a dead versatile

Need to pull a dead versatile 800 about 3/4 of a mile. Plan to hook steering cylinder to the pull tractor remote for steering. Do I need to disconnect drive shafts, or will transmission be fine to pull this much distance without pressure lubrication? Thanks for any information.

I would just disconnect the end at the axle and tie up the transmission end so it is out of the way. Preventing transmission lube issues if there were any to begin with. Some of those sized universals had a set of ears with bolts in them so I would tie the caps on with tape or a zip tie across the bolts to hold them on.

Easiest way to be sure that the tranny gets fully lubed would be to remove the driveshaft between the engine and transmission then pull it with the transmission in a medium forward gear.

Under those conditions the transmission lube pump will be running and lubing the transmission.

You will find that input driveshaft is MUCH easier to remove (U-bolts) than the front and rear driveshafts (cups with ears on them for bolts).

i hardly think you will do any damage pulling it 3 or 4 miles an hr for 3/4 mile. but thats me.

Amused red, you are most likely correct.

On the other hand, removing the driveshaft is pretty easy vs the cost of overhauling a 4-WD tractor transmission SHOULD it get damaged by lack of lube!

I suppose I could have someone in the tractor, hold in the clutch, have it in a mid range gear. No drive shaft removal and the trans pump should run enough to lube the upper transmission or am I missing something?

Don't forget brakes or another tractor to the rear providing braking as necessary.
