In answer to your last question, no. The drivetrain in the M's couldn't stand up reliably to six cylinders in the later model 560's. They used soft metal for the gears.

Seems like there is a lot of V8's in M's. Also Olivers. Oliver's tub and chain drive is probably the easiest. There is a 88 Oliver already set up for pulling, with a V8 in the Hook. Also you can turn the final drives upside down in a WD45 Allis and they would be really tough. Vic

I'm not quite sure where you are coming from with the whole Farmall M rear end thing but in my area that is primarily what guys use is Farmall M's. They hold up just fine if not better then Oliver's. Kinda sounds like someone is bashing Farmall's just a little bit? Maybe you should read back on page 2 about why guy hate Farmall and mostly farmall M's ...

M Farmall rearends can take alot I have a 472CI Ford (600hp) eng in front of an M rearend. It even has 30.5-32 cut tires on it too. been working well for 4 years I've had it.
I will see how well my new Super M likes the 5.9 cummins in it (new for this pulling season)
