push pull PTO shafts - secrets?

Well in the case of the JD 375, 5x6 baler (half the weight of a 5x6) the !@#$%^&*()_++_)(*&^%$#@!!@#$$ CV joint is on the tractor end with the shaft permanently secured to the baler....not the removable type. The latching yoke is the tractor end of the CV joint. I restored a boat with a CV joint and thought I was saving money by replacing the bearings with non standard.....bad choice......if you weren't dead center with the helm and made a turn, you progressively rattled your teeth out. Never again.

Sounds like a good idea but obviously you don't be playing with the shaft while the engine is running.
 
When my 296 Bush Hog was delivered, the delivery guy attempted to hook up the PTO shaft to no avil, he struggled with it for ten minutes. It was 1 PM and very hot and I told him I would get it later. I looked in the manual and it said to pull back on the collar and slide the driveline foward on the PTO shaft. The delivery guy was pushing the collar foward. I always make sure the PTO shaft is clean and greased or wiped with oil and to slide the driveline coupler onto the PTO till it hits the groove in the PTO shaft and then pull the collar back and lock it.(Bush Hog cutter). Each Spring I try to remember to disassemble the driveline and clean it and grease it where it will slide back and forth without much effort.
 
Thanks to all for the suggestions. Tried'em all, nothing worked. It finally went on when it wanted to!

Don't forget that you need to weld a length of shaft into it. and cut it to length.
