Question about 8 n brakes

[list:fc9ecc64c0] Ok I have read past post about the brakes not working because of oil from leaking seals. My tractor has no braking at all and judging by the oil around the area this is my problem. My question since all this is completely new to me is what kind of seal is it that I need to replace and best place to buy new brake shoes. Also is the first thing that I need to be checking on the brakes or should I be checking something to adjust. Thanks for any info. [/list:u:fc9ecc64c0]

Yes, the first thing you need to do is adjust the brakes.

But don't plan on that giving you a lot of braking power if the shoes are oily.

Sooner or later, you will need to replace the seals.

John Smith can answer that question much better than anyone around here. Whenever I replace the seals on an 8N, I print this page off:

Get your old shoes relined. If you do not have a local rebuild shop, let me know.

As others have said, make sure your hubs/axle ends are not the cause of the leaking seal.

When I replaced my axle shafts and hubs, I heated my shoes with a propane torch and was able to wipe out a ton a fluid from them. I then sprayed the drums out with brake cleaner. When I put everything back together, I now have brakes that I can stop either wheel with.
