question for 1370rod

1370 rod you are from the sw part of Mn and I got a question for ya.We went to Sioux Falls yesterday via Hwy 23.The windmills around Ruthton have always intrigued me.I haven't seen them for probably 5yrs.Well they have black blades on them now.Is there any rhyme or reason for this?Just curious,do the blades eventually wear out.

Thats a question I really can't answer, those in that area are some of the earlier units. We live 45mi SE of there with turbines close to us. All the later units built in this direction keep getting bigger and all have white blades for reasons unknown to me.

Don't know anything about the turbines but here is another thought/question-are they doing tests to see if the black helps with the bird issue they talk about?

those mills by Ruthton used to have white blades on them, but there was a problem with the blades. One of the blades gave way and was beating on the tube holding up the turbine about 4-5 years ago. Soon after they switched all the units to the newer black blades. Those units are about 20 years old. The newer ones by Rod are much larger and probably more efficient.

I go through Reading a lot on my way over to my brothers.... Nice 2 lane county blacktops for dragging equipment on. May have to stop for a visit next time!
