Question for Bruce (VA)

I am in the process of replacing the brake shoes on my 49 8N Ford. This is all new territory for me so I am struggling a little. I have a copy of Bruce's "50 tips" on my workbench an tip #17 says do not get the cross shaft facing 180 degrees off. My question is what is the cross shaft? Thanks, Del

I'm not Bruce,but You need to buy anI&T FO-4 manual.If You do have one,look up brakes.---lha

Looking at the manual I would say he is referring to the shaft that has the star nut that adjusts the shoes.

That wasn't worded very well. Just like I have a bad habit of using the terms "pivot pin" and "king pin" interchangeably, I do the same w/ the cross shaft & adjuster.

The adjuster/cross shaft consists of p/n's 2223, 2041 & 2048. In fig. FO126 in the I&T manual, parts 12, 13 & 14.

If you get the adjuster 180* out, you can't adjust the brakes.

See the difference in the pictures? Jack-legs like me use a magic marker to note the difference!
