Question For The John Deere Guys

Hmmmm,

Somehow these green wrenches fell off of ebay into my lap.

Does this mean that I now have to find a John Deere tractor to fit 'em?? :>)

Allan, I think you have them old Corn Binders down to a science and are ready for a new challenge. Being a green guy I would love to see you restore some 30 series Deeres or even 40 series you would be alot more comfortable in a soundgard cab. Those New Holland balers look way better behind green horse anyways, ask Wyo Dave I think he would agree

My dad had a set of these wrenches that I lost to the wolves on the farm sale way back when. I’ve got this crazy obsession to get all of that junk back before I drop and just bought ‘em on a whim.

However, I’ve sure been thinking about a green one a lot here lately. 50, 60 or 70 maybe. But Boy! Those silly things are pricey! :>(

Kinda lookin' around.

After the draft horses and along with all the red tractors, he over the years had an unstyled '37A, a 50, one of those little 2010s, a 2020 and ended up with a 60 loader tractor that I traded off after he died.

Hummmmm...lets see Allan, I think I have a 50 in the back of the shed somewhere...put 4 new tires and rims on it...and got sidetracked.
Let's see...I think it's under that pile of feed bags in the far corner...behind the Super M or maybe the Case L.
No...maybe over by the 3 300s or the 450D.
Heck...I don't know...it's in there somewhere.

Those green tractors cost more because they are twice the tractor with half the cylinders of one of those red ones. :) In all seriousness, a 60 would be good because that's what your dad had, but a 720 or 730 diesel would probably be better fitted with your operation. As much as you cussed the little IH gasser, don't know if you want to get another gas tractor or not.

Yeah, I know.

Always liked the way those 70Ds and 720Ds sat there and "thumped/shook" as they idled. You can almost feel it in the ground. :>)

Have this re-occuring dream about a 70 pulling a two-row John Deere tater digger.

Think I might be starting to loose it. :>)

Good stuff is always expensive and it stays that way,Allen.Only hurts during the first purchase. Looks like ya need to find a 4020 to use those wrenches on.

Allan could this be from lack of sleep, I don't know if there is medicine for this but you sure should see a doctor.

I have one of those green things hid in a trailer out back, But Please Don't Tell Nobody.

Yeah, come on and get a green one Allen. I have four and a couple of Red ones and they mix very well. Do jar the ground alittle, Can't hear my H running when the old B is idlin'.
Don

I dunno.

I have a new green one and an old red one. I seen a big red one mowing hay the other day...maybe a 9XX or something in that category...almost stopped and asked if it could bought.

I've got a hankerin' to give up on both red and green and look for something big and orange. Seems like the price tag is always a lot less for them anyway.

Allan;

A long time ago the haymill at Abbot NE got some new 820 JD's to pull their choppers with. One of the operators said. "If you get stuck, leave them idle and they will bounce out."

Allan, I have been around a lot of larger JDs. I have seen them it those black tool boxes on the frame rail of those tractors. Then only thing the big one in your pic, the straight rod with loops on each end is used for as near as I can tell is to.... kill Sidewinder Rattlesnakes with! LOL! they do gather dust and dirt well while they are in the tool box on the tractor. Other than that never, We never used it!

It's a repeat of history, I could never figure it out, but I followed that same path by aquiring a few things my dad owned, and it was rewarding, it's kind of like reliving the past in the present.

In my case, I actually got back one of the tractors he had, and soon found another identical one with really low hours, as his was well worn, engine stuck and I just had to do it. I bought it sight unseen, 1200 miles away not even knowing how I'd get it home. Got a lead on a trucker and with just a phone call he delivered it for about $1600, trusting me for payment, which I had in hand when it arrived. Tractor was just as the seller described and as the photos indicated.

It's just a hobby, but the reward was that I got to run that same old classic D7 Cat, same smell, sounds and the rest, words can't describe the satisfaction of having done it. The best thing about it was hearing the familiar sound of that non turbo big 4 cyl engine, echoing in the valley once again, some 30 years later, the past kind of came alive again, it's an enjoyable experience and a fun hobby, still don't know what drove me to do it, have no regrets though.

We had a B and a 2010 with a loader, I think everyone's had some green at one time or another, my neighor still pulls the seed wagon to the field with the 620, just love to listen to it across the valley lugging along, his oldest sure can back a wagon with it too, he's had that one for as long as I can remember and the last time I saw him doing field work with it was '02, planting 40 acres of hay, and he's got some late model green ones with cabs, but that ole 620 still has it's place.

You aint kidding on that sound thing!! The first time i fired up the 1600after restoring her, I just cracked the biggest smile ever. Same exact sound I remembered from all those years past running it on the sh!t spreader. It's gotta be my favorite one to hear running, but I think the 1855 is my favorite. I just like the way the thing sounds with a load on it, and with just a little faint black cloud coming from the stack.

It doesn't have much sentimental value either, so I can customize it as I see fit without feeling atleast a little guilty when I drill a new hole in the dash for a second light switch and fuses.

Allen,
Yes these wrenches are for John Deere tractors that have the rear wheel adjustment rack and pinion type gear set up, 4020 and 4430 here on our farm have them , you did get alot of crazy answers, but I am sure of my answer. Do not paint them red they will not hold up under that much use!

Like to find one of those open-end type for the old As. Think they were something like 1 3/4" on the big end?

I was always using that old John Deere wrench for something here and there.

Allan

One on the left looks like the one my son plowed up a couple years back. My dad had a "47 B, and the lug wrench was lost my entire memory. It is exactly what my uncle had for his 50.
