Questions from an 8N noob

I picked up a late model 8N at a very good deal. The owner was in the process of restoring it when he passed away. It was mostly disassembled when I got it. I have most of the parts, but I am missing various bolts, brackets, ect.
It was low on compression on #3 due to an egg shaped exhaust valve. I have installed a new valve and she's running good now.
Questions:
What is the lever on the right under the seat?
What type of bolt is used to attach the hood to the dash?
The governor area of the engine seems noisier than the rest of the engine. Is this normal?
Does anything go between the top of the radiator and the hood? Padding?
What size bolts do I need for the front bottom mounts for the hood? The ones under the radiator.
What is used to hold the battery in place?
Should there be anything between the fenders and the mounts on the axle? Is it just metal to metal?

What size bolts do I need for the front bottom mounts for the hood? The ones under the radiator[b:9e70f87cac].(the bottom mount point for the dog leg panels uses 7/16"-20x1-1/8" hardware)[/b:9e70f87cac]

When I started to dive into my '51 8N I picked up a owners manual, parts manual, and a I&T repair manual. Lots of good reference material to work with. Try using the search function on this site for additional info.

Plus you can find most of these parts on the internet for these great 'il ford tractors. The sponsor of this site sells parts or just do a google search for Ford 8N parts.

There are 2 different length bolts that hold the governor in place. The shorter of the two goes on top.

I bought the valve, head gasket and PTO seal from this site.

Dollar bill, thanks for the reminder. I have read that in several other places.
Heading outside to mess around with the tractor, so I may have some more questions this evening.

Bama you can look on this site in the parts catagories to see parts there is a radiatior hood pad, another great site is "nnalert"
I would suggest getting the F-04 manual for your 8N

You need a parts manual.

Bama:

The small lever beneath the seat is the draft/position control lever. Draft position is used for plowing and little else. The draft system on most old Ford tractors does not work properly if at all but is usually repairable once the lift cover is removed.

Both parts manuals and owners manuals are available from CNH. Owners manual reprints are available from the aftermarket.

I suggest betting a Ford tractor catalog from Dennis carpenter. You can request it online. Remove the space and add the requisite dot com.

Dennis Carpenter has reproduction bolts for the hood and doglegs as well as many, many other often needed parts.
