Quick and dirty

Today's project was to replace the stator on the 23 HP Kawasaki in my Ferris ZTR mower. It went right along until it was time to pull the flywheel. I wan't expecting a fight but it didn't want to move after trying various ways of prying it. I have various pullers including a Snap-On set that can be assembled various different ways. I got it out, but to pull this flywheel the jaws had to go outside of the wheel. It is 9 inches and this puller just wouldn't make it out that far. So I looked at other possibilities for awhile but then I went back to the Snap-On. Then the light bulb came on. I cut some bar stock and extended the puller arms, and used a wood working clamp to hold it in. The third time I whacked the bolt head after tightening it popped. As I said I wasn't expecting a fight, and this sure doesn't look like much but it worked. My Snap-on set is pretty small compared to all the different parts that I have made for pulling jobs all centered around a ten inch long 3/4 fine thread bolt.

Cool... I find it hard to believe they did not drill and tap that flywheel...

I have a brand new puller like that its never been of any use : ( are I have been lucky.

I have the same puller. With mine I have the long accessory cross bar,and the long connector bar that goes under the bar and holds
the two legs tight and keep them from springing out.I had to buy those separately. I'm sure you have the short one that goes with
the bar you show. When I bought mine back in the 70's I also bought the metric bolt set with it.I'm glad I did,I didn't use them
much for years, but now I use them the most.

I had a lot of flywheels give me fits when I was in the outboard motor repair business.

Sometimes if you cranked all the torque you could on a puller and let it set overnight the flywheel would be popped loose when you came in the next morning.

BTW, I never saw a flywheel like that that wasn't drilled and tapped.

(quoted from post at 01:55:56 12/12/21) I would remove the ignition modules.

Geo, you don't have the special tool that allows you to slip the flywheel out past them?

(quoted from post at 05:08:02 12/14/21) Take the coils off, smack the puller with a 3 lb hammer
and it will pop right off. Just did the exact same engine
Saturday.

Yup, just as I stated in my OP.
