140 farmall, with quick hitch. hitched a small bush hog to the tractor. hmmm.
looks like i will have to undo the sway link and shove the hitch to the left.
i will have to undo the sway brace to hitch the pto.
wow.

Reverse the sway brace so it is low on the left and high on the right.

Without that sway brace the mower will be all over the place.

"Brush hogs" were not a thing when those tractors were designed.

The PTO shaft does not need to line up directly behind the PTO spindle on the tractor to work properly. It will not vibrate as long as the mower is mounted directly behind the tractor even if the PTO shaft is offset. A pull type implement will vibrate during a turn because the tractor and the implement get out of line. The implement is not directly in line behind the tractor and the tractor spindle and the implement spindle do not point in the same direction. Even though the tractor and mounted mower spindles are not directly in line they point in the same direction and that is what is important. The designers did not make a mistake here.

The way I read it, the main problem was the cross brace is in the way.

You are correct that the side offset is not an issue. As long as the mower gearbox and the PTO shaft on the tractor are fairly parallel.

If you think about it there is very often a vertical angle between the tractor and implement. An angle in 1 plane. All moving the PTO shaft to the side does is tilt that plane on an angle. It does not make it "misaligned in 2 planes."

This is a 1-point hitch mounted mower, right?

I forgot to mention last time that on the Cubs they have special cross braces that have a "U" to allow the PTO shaft through if my earlier idea doesn't work.

The diagonal sway control brace can be installed either way, running top left to bottom right, or top right to bottom left. Sometimes swapping from one position to the other takes care of interference problems such as with a PTO shaft.

The original installation was top left to bottom right, which should be out of the way for the mower power shaft. Maybe yours needs to be swapped one way or the other to solve your problem.
