quick question - drain plug

Ford 3000, 1971. Trying to change the fluid for the hydraulics. There are what looks like two potential drain plugs. One is back further on the differential housing, a square 9/16 plug that has been beat to death and another one near the front that is a large nut (> 1 inch). In the Messick's diagram, it appears that both of these plugs need to be removed to completely empty the contents. Is this true? thanks.

The one on the bottom of the differential housing should be the one to drain the rear axle, which is also the 3 point hydraulics sump. The one further forward is to access an oil passageway that is part of the plumbing for the 3 point lift. in the parts drawing that one is listed as "PLUG; Hydraulic Power Lift Oil Passage, L/Hydraulic Lift;No Longer Serviced NHNA."

Thanks. Both of these share the same fluid right? It looks like the two regions are 'connected' but there is a 'hump' between them that requires both plugs to be removed to completely drain? The "operators manual" describes the "rear axle and hydraulic lift system" as requiring 25.2 quarts. So I am assuming they are referring to both of the areas you are talking about?

It is all one common sump. The only actual drain plug is the rear one. The other just gains access to a hydraulic port inside the rear axle. It will not help much with draining things, except for the small amount of fluid that is inside that port.

Thank you sir. I was hoping it was the other way around. The rear plug is bunged up pretty good - will have to try a pipe wrench on it...Thanks again.

I dont want to be a smarty pants ,,, But,, If the OP's question was regarding a 3000 SOS tractor ,,, would'nt the answers be different ???

As he has not clearly mentioned what transmission etc he has,,, it may be confusing to some that are not overly mechanically minded...

Just a thought I had after reading the thread .....

I don't think that the rear axle is any different between an S-O-S 3000 and one with a manual transmission other than the PTO engagement mechanism is inside the tranny on the S-O-S vs. inside the rear axle on the manual trans models. The 3 point lift hydraulics are the same as far as I am aware.

The system relief valve is in bottom of both pre 65 and 65 up with engine driven hyd pump. The relief in lift cyl under acc plate is lift cyl safety in both.
