i just got the new starter drive for my jubilee, i think the shelled out one is the original as it has the big spring on it, i installed the new one[ from this site] now the question is, is the little pin that goes thru the drive and the shaft only held in by back pressure from the end of the drive housing or am i overlooking something, it did take a lot to pry the thing back enough to install the pin, just dont want to put the starter in tommorrow am and fling parts all over when i crank the tractor up

You can "stake" the pin. Take a cold chisel and hammer on each side of the pin make a quick tap w/ hammer and chisel for peace of mind esp. if pin seems a little loose...

There should be a sleeeve that partly covers the ends of the pin to keep it in. If the sleeve is not extended so that this is appartent than something is not right. Non of the suggestions mentioned should be necessary if it is installed correctly. No glue, no punches etc.

The pin in the the aftermarket one I just took out of an 8N was too long and did not recess into the end on the drive properly. Whoever installed it left it that way with one end cocked up and the cup on the end of the drive sitting cockeyed.

Eric the pin is supposed to be held captive as Zane describes in the recessed bore on the end of the drive. If your's is too long to fit in the recess grind it off or notch the washer until it will.
