R134a poll

Do you have a favorite brand or is it all the same? Thinking about getting a 30 lb can but not sure I would ever use enough to make it practical. Might do a few cars per year and a tractor.

I think it is all the same. All imported. I have a 30# tank because the price of the cans is always changing.

Looks like I need a license to buy 30lb container. That may be a deciding factor.

Brand means nothing. The chemical composition of all of them is the same. The only difference is that some have added dye check.

As far as licensing goes, I think that a license should be required to buy ANY refrigerant. Refrigeration involves some potentially dangerous pressures. Then there is the crying when it either blows up or simply does not work. Servicing A/C should be left to qualified people with the proper equipment and training.

You do have to have a license to buy R134a as of Jan 1 2018. Had to find my 20 year old license because sellers are now required to keep
a copy of the buyer's license on file.

As is there any difference, yes there is. DuPont is obviously the purest and most expensive. Outside of that, there are minimum purety
requirements, so some of the cylinders I get vary in performance I have noticed. I go through about 90lbs a year at my one man shop. In
fact, one of my suppliers got stuck with none to sell a couple years ago because their bulk was not pure enough and was seized by port
inspectors.

That's why rural king does not have jugs any more, they were under$80. I got my license 20 years ago too, now where is it?

they are selling it all day long in one
pound cans. If you've got the money

Local parts store has 30kbs for $200 or 12 oz can for $8.30. money ahead to buy 30 lb can if I use most of it.

INTERESTING generalization! Earlier this summer I bought a case of "Chemours" (new name for the refrigerant division of DuPont) R134A from NAPA for a buck or so less a can than the china stuff at Wallaby World.

As of 1/2018 any 134a in cans 2 lbs or larger is suppose to require a license.
But you can still get a 30 lb can of Suva R134a (DuPont) on amazon for $157 with free shipping.
Better get it while the getting is good.

You can contact Macs for a copy they do charge you for the copy I found my copy It is a joke I would wager as soon as the new blows off no copy of a licence will be needed. Best I remember Dupont sold the rights to 134 to the chines so all of the new production comes form the far east now.. I had my first 1234yf job yesterday I fixed the leak and sent him to the dealer for it to be evacuated and charged...

He had went to the dealer they diagnosed it as a leaking condenser the leak was at the hose manifold to compressor. The attaching bolt was very loose a EZ fix... The condenser, radiator, transmission cooler is all one part a combined unit 2017 chevy Cruz.... It looked like the radiator coolant hoses were part of the radiator so a leaking hose would require a new radiator...

I don't see 134 dyeing off anytime soon you can bet you will see 1234yf systems topped off are charged with 134A... Its been proven its a drop in replacement (don't take that to the bank cuzz I said so Mercedes leaked that one out not me) I don't plan on buying any 1234yf equipment as I am aging out and will be on the sidelines...

One more thang... I had to get the owners manual out to get the hood opened it popped open I could not find the safety latch... I had a 2016 Malibu setting beside it no problem finding the safety latch on it both cars look identical. You have to double pull the hood release latch to release the safety latch :lol:

I needed front brake pads for the 2016 had to special order them from the dealer still waiting on them...

Turbos must be a dime a dozen now both chebbys had one and a 2018 Honda I serviced also. I did the first service on a 2018 RAM 3500 getting the oil filter off and back on is a damm beach what were they thinking... This one should drive quick lubes to drinking.

Rural king cans were like $4.00 about half what auto parts stores want.

China 30lb usually runs $90 each when I buy
in bulk (3+), much cheaper than I have ever
seen DuPont.
