Radiator replacement

I recieved my new replacement radiatior tonight
and I can't say I am pleased with it.
I thought I purchased a Restoration Grade this dose not have the four tabs with 7/16" hole on the side, can someone tell me if I am correct in saying the Dog legs connect to these tabs on the side of the radiatior? currently I do not have the old one here to compare sizes to but it also looks like the Neck is too tall.
I think they may have shipped the wrong one I think I was quoted $267 but I was only billed $208 has anyone else purchased a restoration grade are they supposed to look like the origial 9N radiatior?

Yeah Bart,
Thats what I was saying the other day when I got mine.
Not real impressed either.
My biggest problem was the double 90' pipe on the intake. Interferred with the axle pivot.
And the height of the fill tube. Seems a little high to me.
Find out when I put the hood back on.
Dell asked if I had the rubber isolators in place.
Yes they are. 3/8" thick. Thanks Dell.
Hobo said to grind the axle to make it fit.
That's what I did.
Figured it didn't much matter 'cause there isn't any support at that point anyway.
Guess I could have spread the axle, but I would have to have gone three holes to clear the pipe.
Makes the front end too wide for me.
So after grinding and little touch-up paint, here's what I got.
Not the greatest fix, but it will work.
Hey Dan, you usin' your old rad or you ordering a repro.
Just a heads-up, they aren't the same.

Joker is that axel going to clear when you run over a hump pump or rock ? looks like it may rock up and hit the inlet pipe. iam thinking about buying on and the thought crossed my mind.let us know how it turns out. thanks Bob

That is not even close to the right rad. for your tractor. The right one has brackets which bolt to the doglegs, or at least mine do.Also that double 90 at the bottom is not right. In my mind,a reproduction should be at least close to original. I don't know what to do about your problem,but I wouldn't use that radiator.There are too many differences to adapt YOUR tractor to.---lha....My $.02

After grinding, it clears the pipe.
I lifted the axle as far as I could. Seems OK now.
The true test will be when I get the wheels back on.
I don't like it, but that was the only style rad available to me.

There is NO aftermarket 9N radiators available any where in the world.There are NO 9-2-8n aftermarket "just like original" radiators available any where in the world.I have the original blueprints for the radiator and have checked several.When buying a radiator,one should ask questions.100% OF THE AFTERMARKET RADIATORS HAVE SOME ISSUES.There should no grinding required on the front support,and the neck should not be too high either.The only issue should be the over-sized bottom inlet connection,and that is only a problem when installing the fan shroud.There are radiators available that are pretty close,but none gets the cigar.You may have to trim the shroud a bit.The present aftermarket fan shrouds are way too wide and will not fit any radiator without causing problems.
You can believe this statement or not,your money and time. don b1

Tom,

I think you will have problems with the axle hitting the radiator on bad bumps. It looks like you have the front wheels set as far inbound as they will go. If you widened them 3 holes it looks like it would clear the radiator with no problems.

Joker your radiator is different from mine my lower end is similar and the over flow is hard pipe like original also and I should have no clearance issues, I was not impressed that the new one has paint comming off of it even though it is an easy fix.
I will have to grind off all of the welds and brazing on the original to get the tabs or just remake them completely at my buddys sheet metal shop.I was trying to stay away from this.
Purchaed this radiatior from external_link so far they have been great to deal with sent me a replacement 6 volt head light at no cost one of my new ones fryed as soon as I put power to it.

The PO of my 43 cut the axle off where it interferres with the radiator. You don't even realize its gone untill you take both outer axles off to paint.

Judgomg bu your photos you've put some time into painting that tractor. Any chance of seeing the whole thing? It looks like you took it all apart to paint.

Yes I took the entire tractor aprart your site helped greatly when installing the steering tower.

Maybe I read all this 9N chit wrong,,,, did ford mount the dog legs to the radiator,,, just don't figger to me,,,, how bout a pix....

in my 1939-1947 Service Manual it shows the radiator it shows the dog legs do hook to the radiatior side tabs I will attempt to attach the PDF

Probably one engineering fudge up I would change anyways,,, worked on 2N's but never seen a dog leg that depended on the rad for support,,, good enuff reason for me to stay away from'em :lol:
