Radiator status

I got the rest of my parts from YT yesterday, except the radiator itself. Parts came direct from YT via Priority Mail, five calendar days after ordering. I was a bit surprised to find that several of the parts have Dennis Carpenter labels.

BIL is working on straightening, patching and painting my hood, I figure at least a week and more likely two weeks before he's done with it.

My radiator order from YT was taking a long time, I asked and it had been "lost". if you don't get in within another week, ask!

I'm not concerned yet. I expect a radiator is sent via the slowest possible means, and I'm not ready for it at any rate.

I am annoyed, however, that YT doesn't do a better job of communicating shipping status. My order has been split up into three shipments, but they only sent me the tracking number for the Priority Mail package shipped from their warehouse. They didn't give me any info on the drop shipment from Ohio, and I have no idea where my radiator is coming from and if it has shipped. Most etailers that drop ship (e.g. Rock Auto) provide detailed shipping information. We're now in the third decade of the twenty-first century; customers expect better.

That is why i DO NOT BUY from them all these provide tracking information on ALL ORDERS i have ordered from all these the last 40+ years never had a problem with any of them

I had received mine last week. Yesterday opened the water pump box and took it out of the sealed plastic with german writing on it. Found some scratches and a long gouge in the metal plate. Like someone took a chisel to it. Definitely not dropped or a shipping issue. Sanded it down and put aviation gasket seal on both sides of the plate.

The radiator arrived this afternoon. It was drop-shipped from Dennis Carpenter! I see YT and DC sell the radiator for the same price, $269.95.

I've looked and haven't found any indication of the country of manufacture. I weighed it and my old radiator and they're very close: 19 lbs for the original and 18 lbs for the replacement. The new radiator has a four-row core, but I doubt it's any better than the original, since the tubes are quite a bit smaller than those in the original three-row radiator.

I immediately noticed something rattling in the lower tank. I was able to shake it out, and it was a lump of solder about 3/8" in diameter. You would think someone would have taken the time to shake it out before shipping the radiator. Here's a picture of the solder glob, next to the radiator cap for comparison.

An additional comment forgotten previously.

The steel mounting frame surrounding the radiator is attached to the top and bottom tank only by solder. Overtightening the mounting bolts will break the solder joint between the frame and the bottom tank.

I use both flat and split lock washers on the stove bolts mounting the radiator and tighten the nuts only enough to collapse the lock washers.

Thanks for the tip, Dean. I was more concerned about breaking the bolts themselves. The aftermarket bolts look dubious, and I broke one of the original bolts taking it out.

Right now, I'm waiting on the weather to improve a bit so I can sandblast and paint the fan shroud and other parts.
