Re: Bosch PES inline pump

Reset the pump timing marks, then make sure the REAR
number four cylinder valves are moving, exhaust closing and
intake starting to open. This makes sure pump is timed to fire
the front number one cylinder. If pump marks are aligned but
the FRONT valves are moving on the overlap, then pump is
out of time 1/2 turn.

I must have been very lucky. I had dieseltech work on mine and I got everything back as it was supposed to be. Between all the marks
I made on things prior to removal, reading the service manual and e-mailing my stupid questions to Dieseltech it fired and went
first try. You'll get it, be patient. Sometimes the service Manual can be a bit confusing, slow down read re read look at the
pictures. you will be succesful. gobble

Did the engine start & run before you pulled the pump? If you are absolutely sure of the timing, remove the injectors & take an actual
compression reading with a proper gauge. I'm not familiar with the hand over the intake method of checking compression.

I haven't had much time the last couple weeks to work on my 700B until yesterday. I checked and rechecked the timing (I even rotated the crank 360 degrees and reset the timing to make sure it was right originally and it was). I still didn't have any luck getting to it do anything other than a couple fires. So this morning while trying to start it I loosened the pump and rotated it a little to see if that helped. I snugged it back and shot a little ether in it and it started! Let it run for a bit then cut it off and it restarted again without ether. I just went out and rechecked the timing and it's at 20.5 degrees btdc! I'm thinking I could move it around a little and get it closer to 31 but wanted to know what you guys think.

Wilson, when you have the damper marks at 31 and the scribe lines on the pump mounting flange and the drive gear scribe line in alignment when installing the pump into the adapter and allowing for gear twist so the two scribe marks align when the pump is bolted fast you should be good, the scribe line on the drive gear is often hard to find, I am not sure that you have enough leeway in the slots to go from 20 to 31 degrees. You may be a tooth off in the drive where the pump mounts if you cannot get the 31 but you should see that in the scribe lines at the pump mounting.and the mark on the gear just ahead of it, as I said before, the scribe line on the gear can be difficult to find, brake kleen and clean rags to dry the gear up are helpful, if hard to see why not centerpunch it so it is easier.

I haven't posted for a couple weeks but I did go and move the timing back to the proper mark and the engine still starts and runs. There is still some smoke at first but it clears up shortly and seems to be getting less with each start. Thanks for all the help. Now on to the next issue!
