Re: Farmall H ??

Is it running smooth?, not missing? clutch not slipping?, governor opening throttle under load? Don't worry about it, it was only 25HP when new.
Want more power, buy an M.

Well, a pretty good test for clutch
slippage is to take it up a long
fairly steep hill in 5th gear. Do this
on a road, and not just up a hill in
the field or pasture. If no slippage,
your clutch is ok. 5th gear full
throttle is pretty fast. Actually, a
little to fast for this tractor on an
up-hill grade. It'll put the clutch to
a test. You don't need to pull
anything behind the tractor for this
test if the hill is steep enough. Just
the tractor itself is enough. If no
slippage, might be a good way to test
the horses too. The engine should have
enough horses to take the hill in 5th,
considering no clutch slippage. Cutch
slippage is RPM's stay the same, and
ground speed reduces.

If this is a seldom used tractor you might look at the mechanical advance in the distributor for being stuck not letting the advance work, check settings to carb fuel supply at the carb might be a partially plugged screen or line. Governor could be getting worn some and then if he wants 60HP he needs to go by more tractor an H is not that.

the best is to hold the brakes let out clutch with tractor in low or second gear if it kills the engine clutch is good. that is providing you have good brakes.

Well, I think the concept would be about the same if driver didn't shift TA down to low side like they're probably suppose ti do. The H didn't have this feature.
Otherwise, be about the same. I haven't driven a 300 much, but I'm thinking the one I drove, had a TA. They had maybe a little extra horse. But stands to reason the clutch was beefed up a tad to compensate.

It would work on a 300 if you don't pull the T/A, definitely. The 300 was ~35 HP new; most of the C169's have been punched out to C175's and will make around 42 to 45 HP (mine dyno'd 45 when I bought it 8 years ago).

Long story short, it has more power but the test would work the same. However, rustred's method works better and doesn't require a long stretch of road.
