My first tractor wont start unless pulled by my truck. Battery has plenty of juice, yet it will not start this way. Any hints. Thanks all :)

If you can give us some hints first it will help us to come up with suggestions for you. Is it gas or diesel? Does it crank over fast, slow, not at all?

I had a 3000 gas that wouldn't start if you toughed the throtle or the choke. It either was moved it had to be pulled to start. I never did figure out why. It had a good battery, good spark no fuel problems and would run great if started at an idle and choke not pulled, maybe yours has the same thing. Mine would start right up in below freezing temps by just turning the key, not moving the throtle or pulling tje choke out. I figured if it started and ran good there wasn't a problem. Sorry your right, just stumped like the one thats in a pasture. It's a 3000 diesel it turns over fine and puffs smoke like the dickens. This model doesn't have glow plug either do they. Ordered a manual and a service/mechanic book.

White puffs mean its getting fuel. How fast is "turns over fine"? I suspect when you pull start it the engine is spinning a lot faster than with the starter.

First thing to check is how fast its cranking - not familiar with Ford tractors, but there should be a spec somewhere. Next check is compression - if compression is low it will have to spin faster to start.

Good luck,

Keith

Is this from cold or when it is hot too? Does it have a excess diesel start device on the pump and, if so, are you using it? Will it jump start from your truck? Injectors may need maintenance or the other points made by posters.

Really does sound like a low compression problem. Will it start with the starter with the aid of starting fluid? Haven't been around those 3000s much as far a working on them. Does it have a primary fuel pump to push the fuel through the filters? I know from other tractors that if that pump is bad it will cause hard starting problems.
