Check the volts at the ign side of the coil with the engine stopped and the points closed. Be sure there is 0v showing on the distributor side.

For a 6v coil, it should be around 7 to 9 volts. If it is full 12v, the coil is probably damaged, and the points burned.

Be careful, leave it too long the can will explode!
 
My go to for carburetor parts is McDonald Carb. It would be good to have the carburetor number available.

The coil says "Use External Resistor". Ballast resistors are not all the same. After installing the resistor, ground the distributor terminal and turn the ignition ON. You should read about half of the battery voltage at the excitation terminal of coil. I have run into situations where the ignition resistor dropped too much voltage. If the battery was a little low, the engine would crank, but not start.
