As a retired teacher I can support your position.
First the the athletic program supports only a few gifted individuals while the rest are often left to feel inferior. While there were a few athletes who where good students, most did not do well in the classroom. Often the teachers are pressured into giving the jocks passing grades.
Secondly, the money spent on supporting the atheletic programs seems to be untouchable. Often during a budget crisis teachers and staff are cut but the money for the atheletic program may even be increased.
Lastly, who believes that riding a bus for hours, playing a dumb kids game and then riding for hours to get home, get to bed and get up in a couple of hours and go to school is good for any kid?
