Can I assume that you have the belt off when you're trying to motor the generator? If so, sometimes it'll need a little spin of the pulley by hand to get it started.

The theory of operation is pretty much the same between 6 and 12V systems with the exception of battery polarity. Did the shop polarize the generator for positive ground?
