Ready to install torque converter

I've just finished putting new seals and a bushing in my 830 case-o-matic torque converter.
My question is the nylock capscrew that attaches the PTO shaft to the front of the torque converter. When I first removed the capscrew there were bits of a hard black substance on it and they just flaked right off. Was this what was left of the "nylock"? Do I need a new screw, or could I just use some form of locktight on the old screw instead?

I"m affraid I don"t have an anser for you but I am curious if you had trouble getting parts and how hard of a job it was if you did it yourself? Did you replace the direct-drive clutch while you were in there? Thanks.

I did not need to replace the clutch, it worked perfect. The problem was that the seals leaked badly, when I used the tractor all the fluid in the converter housing would be pushed into the standard transmission case. If you wanted to keep working you had to keep pouring in more oil.
If you let the tractor sit for a few hours the oil would flow back in again. I was planning on doing a complete restoration on it anyway so I tore it all apart. I bought an old dealers service manual, that has all the directions for removal and repair. I also got advice from a Case mechanic that had worked on case-o-matics in the past. In order to remove the torque converter, you are supposed to have a special carrier that bolts to the converter that is made by Case. I took some measurements off the tractor and with the pictures in the manual, had my father-in-law weld one up for me. I used that to pull it from the tractor. I needed the two seals that sit inside the clutch drum they were $20 a piece from Case. They also had the piston ring that sits on the PTO shaft and the larger seal that goes on the outside of the clutch drum. The only thing case did not have was the brass bushing that sits inside the torque converter. I had to bring the whole converter to a machine shop they installed it for $80.
With all the seals, gaskets etc. I would say it cost around $250. So to answer your question it wasn't too difficult but I did take my time, because I didn't want to make any mistakes.
