Only thing I don't beleive in that article is the term "clean coal power plant"!

Coal is dirt. You burn dirt you get dirt! Dirty air, Dirty water!

All that dirt sure does make me warm, lets me see at nite and keeps the beer good n cold...

Coal is gooood

Coal is still a fine fuel but cleaning it up is definitely a good idea - both production and burning. Been lot's of coal miners in my family but none of them ever wanted to live near or downstream of a mine.

Let's stop using coal. Nuclear plants are DEFINITELY a better source of power. Any idiot that thinks wind turbines, solar panels, and power dams are the cure, hasn't done the math about how many it would take to keep america running. They're nothing more than a feel good idea for a publicity campaign. Nuclear plants are DEFINITELY a better source of power. What to do with the nuclear waste? We already paid billions to make storage under a mountain, we could go ahead and use that for the next 100 years, until the fool that says coal power and nuclear power is too dirty, can come up with a good idea to replace it.

The enviromentalists always have to stick their noses in the conversation. Better hide your antique tractors guys, they are after them too. They cause too much air pollution.

Without AN ALTERNATIVE to coal most people in the USA WILL freeze in the dark.

Coal will run out. There is no "Silver Bullit" answer. There is only "Silver Buckshot". Nuclear, Hydro, Wind, Solar, Biomass, Conservation. Some small distributed generation where there is demand. Small towns with a proven energy resource should develop it for their own use and benefit. We now leave our energy supply in the hands of the big tax supported monoplies.

Read 'Big Coal'. It'l scare you!

Everything is a matter of degree and environmental protection is no exception.

Do you remember when you could tell who had indoor plumbing by walking along the side of the creek and watching raw sewage spew from the pipes on the bank when they flushed? I do.

Did you ever live in a heavy chemical industry area like the Kanawha River Valley in WV and have to avoid water sking too close to a plant discharge pipe because the water would peel the varnish off your wooden skis ? I did.

Did you ever hear your Dad come storming into the house in the morning ranting because the dew had deposited a layer of stack particulates, caustics, and acids on his new car and ruined the paint. I did.

Do you remember when congress passed the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts and Nixon created the EPA to enforce them. And how people *itched when they had to put in a septic tank. And all the coal, power, and chemical companies went off about intrusive over-reaching government and excessive unwarranted costs that would ruin them. I do.

Do you remember how much better the water and air got and how people started swimming and fishing in the creek again and the big companies cleaned up their operations and got even bigger and richer? I do.

Do you want to go back? I don't.

The environmental challenges continue to come as we develop new technologies and become more and more industrialized. Ignore them at your and your children's peril.

I agree with you fully, but most of the enviromentalists that I know have tunnel vision, they only see things their way.I have been heavily involved with them the last 15 years. When we tried to build a state of the art landfull in our county they fought us 8 years before we got it approved. They have shut down a large windmill project in our area due to bats.I was at a public hearing monday on the gas well drilling in marcellus shale. They fight everything that comes up but at the same time they want the road paved to their front door and want to get up at 2 AM and flip on a light switch and the power be there to burn it. I am on the solid waste authority and the planning commission in my county. I know all the issues. We live in a very poor county. 78% of all the tax money collected goes to the school system.I recycle and I believe in protecting the enviroment, but somebody has to pay the bills .End of rant.

I understand - the zealots are everywhere and pushing a thousand different causes. Enviornment is just one. For example I love dogs but can't stand PETA because they have no common sense. Doesn't mean they don't have a place in the discussion - I just don't support most of their ideas. As for Marcellus shale - I own several leases in Marshall Co. WV and like the income but the recovery process is very intrusive and the effects on ground water are far from well established (no pun intended). If they were pumping in the vicinity of my MD well I'd be concerned and want some assurances. I think that is simply reasonable.
