rear axle housings

Given the problems with the rear axle seals of the early model 8n"s
(leaking oil onto the brakes etc.); Can the rear axle housings of
the early 8n"s be replaced with the axle housings from a later model
that contain an inner oil seal??

Yep, the later housings bolt right on and they are usually pretty easy to find. You may also need to swap axles if the later ones have a machined place for the inner seal to run. It you have a friend at a machine shop they could probably machine the earlier housings to accept the inner seal. If you have to pay for that kind of work it will cost more than just getting a set of the later housings.
