Rear axle seals

I have a 1948 8N that is leaking where the rear axles meet the body. How big of a project is it to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Steve........ah yes, the infamous rear axle leak. aka as lower 3-point link pin. These are fixed by removing the trumpet in one piece (brake and axle) and tightening the cotterkeyed castelated nut to 150ft/lbs. You can NOT tighten from outside. We recommend removing the LEFT trumpet so you can also tighten the right side after sliding out the diffy. (2-nuts with 1-gasket, eh?) TIP: swipe the 11-hole diffy gasket with HOT water to relax the paper so it don't tear.

Iff'n theses instruction are unclear, you might want to squander $25 (cheap) for the I&T FO-4 manual. Also check the archives at the top of this great N-Board. This is a semi-common problem. Unlike the 9N/2N's, the 8N's lower link pin is a "taper-fit" and does NOT need gaskets. Howsomevers; they've been known to "waller-out" the trumpet hole due to non-maintenance. J&B "weld" is the prefered fixx'em-up for wallers, follow instructions. ........HTH, Dell
