Rear brush hog question?

I just bought a new brush hog, however my question is:
How do you keep the cutter driveshaft on the PTO shaft of the tractor? I know that my driveshaft length is correct (or at least not too long) mainly cause the cutter will go up and down with the drive shaft lengthening as the cutter goes down. The directions that came with the cutter do not show anything that keeps the cutter shaft attached to the PTO of the tractor.
Fill me in fellas.

Should be some kind of pin lock on the end of the shaft that fits on pto spline shaft. Mine has a round pin that moves back and forth to lock it in or take it off. This pin I have is right next to the joint and the shaft of spines.

Like Larry said......Line up the coupler with the shaft and push it on. It should go forward roughly 1" and stop. On the side of the coupler is a button sticking out that you push in then the coupler will go all the way onto the shaft.

Release the pin and pull the coupler backwards (toward you) and you should hear the pin lock in the groove cut in the shaft for this purpose.

It's got a push detent on the PTO side of the universal. Push the detent and you should find that you'll slide deeper onto the PTO shaft and lock.
You'll need to push the detent when you go to remove the shaft as well

It's either that push in detent button like mentioned, line up the splines and slide it on with the button pushed down, it will snap in.

Another newer type, is where the whole collar on the pto shaft end coupler slides back, (we have a challenger rotary mower that has this) hold it back as you slide on the pto shaft.

One thing, make sure the pto shaft splines on the tractor are clean, and that the coupler is clean and lubed enough to keep the moving parts free.

If you jam on an implement pto coupler to the tractors pto shaft that is slightly rusted, it will be stuck but good, even with a little surface rust, has to be clean, probably more so with a newer tractor, no wear on the pto shaft spines. The hired help, particularly one individual used to do this to me, leave the post hole digger on the tractor, when I needed to mow, go to take the digger off, but can't get the shaft coupler off, finally after placing a block of wood, hammering it apart, you could tell the implement's splines had surface rust, clean those out with a wire brush and lightly lube, never drop the couplin in the dirt when not in use, tie it up off the ground, and always check for dirt, grit and or contaminants, clean same before hooking up.

I looked at the U joint on the cutter and I see a nub on the inside of the spline of the u joint, no button. But I need to see if this thing will lock into the spline of the tractor PTO.

I have seem Pto shafts that have a detent pin on one end. The other end that goes on the bush hog gear box does not have a detent pin but a hole for a bolt. You may have the pto shaft reversed. DH

I hate to say this but if you don't know anymore than this about hooking up a brush hog are you sure that you should be operating one of the most dangerous pieces of equipment on a tractor.
Most accidents on the farm are from in-experience.

I run super hazardous equipment everyday, mostly machine tool equipment. But I have never ran a brush hog before (until now) I see on the Ujoint collar where there is a nub that twists into position, and should lock into the spline. I will try it tomorrow. BTW: the instructions dont even mention the nub on the U joint or give any other pins or snaprings to attach to the PTO spline.

The shaft is correct, the hole with the bolt goes onto the brush hog cause there is a hole on the shaft on the brush hog, and the directions explain that it is hooked up with the shear bolt side hooked up to the cutter.

Due to saftey concerns, PTO's now have a collar lock. There should be a moveable collar that can be slipped back. Hold it bach as you slip the shaft onto the stub, then let go and push it until it clicks in the groove on the stub. Give us a picture, we'll tell you for sure.

I have done Heinrick maneuver before but I won't do other more complected things with out someone showing how.

Just running some type of machinery does not make you an expert on farm equipment. Get someone to show how to hook it up.

I'am surprised no one has said or ask if YOU HAVE A 1 3/8" mower shaft but are putting it onto a Ford or Ferg.with a 1 1/8 shaft,it will do exactly what you are saying it is doing.DO YOU?
