Rear end fluid options

I got weld on hubs , and my axle seals started leaking. Was wondering if anyone ran a thick grease in the rear end instead of 80/90 and had it stay pretty leak free ? Thanks

Assuming it is a pulling tractor so probably going to cause a bit more drag with heavier oil = loss of HP to the wheels. Might not be too significant but still? I could never understand the logic in weld on hubs?? I realize it gives you a tad more transferable wieght but is it really worth it? I see a lot of guys do it but to me it doesnt seem like a good idea, for a couple reasons. - for one how do you know what grade of steel axles are made of? I am guessing they are not low carbon steel so probably need some amount of preheat to prevent cracking?? - I guess you just found out what the next reason is! Sorry not much help was I.

Some manufacturers’ hubs (IHC specifically) are known for breaking under heavy load while pulling. Hence rules were made to required welded hubs to prevent runaway wheels. As mentioned, the welding then becomes the issue.

For the OP, you are probably best to just let the oil leak down to a level where it stops. The case doesn’t need to be full to the recommended level for pulling. As long as there is enough oil so the bottom gear pick it up there will be adequate lubrication.
