Rear End Leak

When I connect this "Clamp - Bracket, rear muffler. EXACT of ORIGINAL. For tractors: 9N, 2N, 8N {1939-1952}. (Part No: 9N5260)" to the bottom trumpet bolt of my 2N, fluid leaks at a pretty good rate. Take it off, tighten it back up and no leaks. The bolt is too short to double up the nuts. Suggestions? Thanks, Dave

I went & looked at mine&what I would try is to get a bolt the same size, take your bolt out,put other one in [to stop leaking] put a good coat of old time indian head gasket sealer or aviation form-a-gasket on the bolt.Then quickly take out the bolt&put in the "goopy"bolt,tighten up according to specs.---lha

If I follow you correctly, the lower stud for the muffer clamp to attach to, should be 2.25" long. This one is longer than the oters that attach to the axle housing. Someone may have switched studs at one time or other and used the wrong one. Parts book says the correct stud should be 7/16"-14 & 7/16"-20 X 2.25" ( part number 357708-S8.)

Sorry, It is a stud and it is longer but with the clamp installed cant seem to get enough torque on it to seal it up. Naturally I just had all this apart and could have fixed then if i'd known. There was so much leaking from the lower link pin that i've always thought that was the culprit. Anyway thanks for the replies. Does this "goop" you refer to work under oily conditions? just spent $50 on new hyd fluid so would hate to drain if didnt have to.

Yes,it's designed to seal oil gas,water,steam,just about everything except alchohol,which is it's base,go to auto parts store and ask for it.---lha

If I remember correctly, that stud goes thru into the oil chamber. If it were mine and it was leaking, I'd only back the stud out enough threads so that a lot of oil didn't come and smear what ever sealing goop you choose to use on the exposed internal stud threads. If you take it all he way out and it does go into the oil chamber, it will leak out pretty fast. I'd then take a double nut and tighten the stud pretty snug, then install the muffler clamp. That should seal it up pretty good. I'm sure there are other sealers that are as good as Indean Head sealer or maybe even better, but I've use that stuff for over 50 years and never had a problem.
