Rear end plug

Just drained hydraulic fluid from my 3600. Manual
states 24.6 U.S. qts. I removed the level plug, poured
five gallons fluid in. Noticed fluid was flowing out.
Grabbed the level plug couldn't get it to start, then
saw I was trying the wrong hole.
Haven't had the tractor very long and wanted to
change all filters and fluid. I removed the level plug
about a week ago and added fluid left from power
steering. Noted no fluid came out. Knew I was changing
it in a few days.
Anyone know what plug I'm missing? Picture and
instructions doesn't look the same as mine.
Ford 3600 with 2.9 diesel year 1979
Thanks!

Level check plug should be a square head pipe plug. If you removed a screw that's lower down it could be the screw that holds the intake tube bracket in place. The screw is number 69 in the parts drawing at the link below:

Once you remove that screw the bracket that it screws into usually shifts out of position so you can't get the threads started again without moving the bracket back. You should be able to do it with a helper by removing the round plate on the left side that the PTO handle is mounted on and one of you reach in and hold the bracket in place while the other one starts threading the screw from the other side. You're in good company... a number of folks on here have done it.

Thanks Sean, I didn't remove the screw! Guess the previous owner did. I removed the correct square head pipe bolt. Because it takes a little over six gallons to fill, I added the full five. My intention was after adding the five start the tractor raise the lift and add until fluid was coming out the plug I had removed.
When fluid started before I got the full five, that's
how I discovered my problem. Now looks like I need to find a replacement screw, then see if I can get it
correctly attached. I believe you mentioned I need to
remove the plate from the left side? Guess I'll lose
more fluid? Do you know size of missing screw? With
help is it very difficult? Again I thank you for this
info.

Parts list on the parts diagram page that I provided the link for says that screw is:

part number 280353 - SCREW,Pan Hd, 5/16" - 24 x 1 1/8"

It also needs a seal under the head of the screw, which I believe is a rubber o-ring or washer. It is part number 68 in the diagram, with the following part number and description:

part number 81800802 OIL SEAL, 8.18mm ID, 13.46 OD x 2.13mm thk.

You should be able to get both of them at any New Holland dealer.

I copied this several years ago from somewhere else and it has always helped to serve as a reminder for me:

That dipstick is for your transmission fluid level only only. The transmission also has a small square-headed pipe plug to check fluid level on the right hand side about halfway down the side of the trans. You add fluid until it comes out of this port.

As your are seated on the tractor, the transmission fluid level check plug is by your right toe. It's a small square-headed pipe plug in the side of the trans. The filler cap for the transmission is on top of the trans.

The rear differential fluid level check plug is behind your right heel as you are seated on your tractor. Once again, it is a small square-headed pipe plug. You may have to squat down to see this plug.

The rear differential reservoir is where your hydraulic pump draws fluid. The filler cap is on top of the rear differential center housing. (My 3600 has two filler caps there - both serve the same purpose).

The drain plugs are square-head plugs that are recessed. You have to get under the trans and rear end to see them. Also, the drawbar may obscure the rear end drain plug. I have to unbolt my drawbar and slide it back to get to my rear drain plug.

Thanks Pig9r, I didn't remove the missing plug. It was removed by the previous owner. The missing plug is a 5/6" x 1 1/4" truss head screw about an inch bellow the level fill plug. The level fill plugs have square head pipe bolts. Thanks for the info!
