Rebuild 8N starter

Help! I am trying to rebuild the starter on my 8N. Took it apart and realized the brushes were almost gone. Bought new ones. Had to drill out the screws holding 2 of them, but no problem. Then I tried to desolder the other two. Can"t use butane torch for fear of burning the wiring. Tried two different solder guns. One is 180 watts. With the tab bent over the old wires, I have to get it hot enough to melt the solder and unbend the tab. No luck. I am totally exasperated. Any hints on how to remove them would be greatly appreciated. Any solder tool or iron that will work?

Old-time starter repair guys used a carbon rod and welder and flowed current from a welder through the rod into the joint to heat it to unsolder and solder.

A large "soldering copper" heated with a torch before applying it to the joint works well.

If this is a one-time deal for you, finding a shop to do it will be FAR less aggravating.

Thanks! Great reply. Never thought about the welder or the old soldering coppers. I know I should take it to a shop, but I'm just stubborn enough to want to do it myself. I couldn't believe the 180 watt iron would not melt it. Not sure how the welder would work, since current through the carbon rod would still have to flow back to the welding machine. If it went through the windings, even by accident, it would surely fry the starter.

Solder guns wont do it.You need 300 watt soldering irons. In any case if you dont know what you are doing ,stop and leave it to people who know how.You need 300 plus watts.Hot carbons work better.

Actually, NO, it wouldn't.
