Rebuilding a 450

[Eastern shore farmer]

Hello, currently starting to dig into my 450 gas. Needs a
basic in frame rebuild kit. It has flat top pistons in it
currently and see they dont sell them anymore in a kit? Will
the flattop pistons fit? Just wanna double check things
before I go out and buy a kit that wont work for me. TIA!

i am not understanding your question. if it has flattops why are u wondering if new flattops will fit? better to install the firecrater ones.

Sorry I typed to fast! It currently has flattop pistons and want to know if the step head pistons that this company sells would fit? I dont see any replacements for the flat tops, were the stepheads a replacement for them?

[rustred]

yes. give you more power.

If you buy a kit that is specified to fit a 450, it will fit unless they send you the wrong parts by mistake.

The kit comes with pistons and sleeves. If you are planning on just replacing the pistons don't bother. Just get a set of rings and do a "ring job." Save the kit for later or save your money.

More then likely when it was rebuilt the last time who ever did it used M &W flat tops. Just like my S/MTA has they seamed to think that the flat top lugged better . ?????? mine on the dyno will put out 60 Hp. . My one friends S/MTA we rebuilt several years back the second time since new as it was his grand fathers and he bought it new in 55 as a left over .on his we installed what his grand father put in after it caught fire under the picker and those pistons were the HIGH alt. pistons with a 450 GAs head and the hump on them is way taller then the step head so you have LOTS of room for out of the box step heads . IF ya can find the high alt pistons that is even better . Now one thing to also look into is to make sure that you do infact have the GAS head and NOT a L P head as the flat tops were used in L P engines also. then things MIGHT get tight .

(reply to post at 09:36:52 03/02/23) Any type of the sets with 1 inch pins for a C-264 and C-281 will work. Or supposed to.
