Hello everyone, new on here, very frustrated, have a yanmar 2000, great tractor for a few years, then had to rebuild engine, new rings, head, gaskets, valves, the whole nine yards, my problem is , the tractor will start right off, but smokes like crazy, very black smoke, lots and lots of smoke, runs at almost idle, won't rev up past high idle, more rpms, more smoke, no noises, i did not rebuild pump, was running well before rebuild, just had blow by and used a ton of oil,? anyone have any suggestions?

Air filter good, will check compression but know it's strong, one more question in timeing , the valves are set for 17mm , both exhaust and intake, but my manual is smeared so bad can/t figure the notches on the crank shaft, i can feel two marks or notches, do you set it on the first mark as it rolls over or the second notch???

Click on the HOYE sign at top of page, then look on left-Tech info-Valve setting.
After they are set, make sure the compression release isn't holding valves open-you might have to set it too.

I hope you meant .17mm, (.006") clearance. Is the engine fairly easy to turn over with a socket wrench? Sounds possibly like trying to seize and governor attempting to compensate with more fuel. Can't tell you about timing marks, but probably would not start if out of time.

I'm thinking you were asking about the timing marks in regard to setting the valves, if so, Barry answered that question. I may be wrong though, have you had the pump off and changed the amount of shims under it?

engine starts right off, good oil pressure, just lots of smoke and will not rev up. i sure it's either injectors or pump, didn't pull pump, just major ovrhaul of engine, rings inserts, mains head resurfaced with new valves, springs and the whole nine yards, had the crank miked, it is OK, cynlinders resurfaced, , plenty of compression, will take the injectors and run test on them, i am pretty sure the injectors are bad, pump is unknown at this time, can you order the rebuild kits for the injectors???

If you click on the individual parts on the injector page you will see some parts are available. However, without the proper test equipment I don't think this would be something you would want to do. The injectors are to be set with the shims so as to pop off at the correct pressure. I do not know just what the 2000 injector is to pop at but do know the 226 injector goes off at 2275 psi. <LINK_TEXT text="http://www.hoyetra...&Category_Code=YM2000INJECTOR</LINK_TEXT>

When you had the head off what did the these injector chambers look like? <LINK_TEXT text="http://www.hoyetra...een=PROD&Product_Code=IC-4450</LINK_TEXT>

If the injectors were good before the overhaul they should be good now. Does the engine turn over easily?

There are timing marks on the gears that have to be lined up, (cam, crank) the idlers do not matter. Maybe you have them one tooth off.
