Recent fan shaft questions

Been seeing a few question and remarks about the old style rubber friction assemblies lately. I've also seen quite a few questions regarding fan shaft/gov gear noise in the model H with myself included a while back. I've read and have been told that the later friction disk assemblies were quite a bit better. Started thinking about this a few days ago that perhaps the noise issue could be coming from the old rubber ones in which MAYBE the rubber is old, hard, brittle and stiff and has lost the 'give' that it should have... With that said could the gear noise be caused by the non-give of the rubber assembly somehow someway.... ???? Any thoughts on this ? And please no replies on how to shim or replace gears, bearings, check oil passages.... Been there done that a few times !

Most likely a bearing noise. When the rubber mounted fans get hard and brittle, they usually go into the radiator.
