It helped put John Wayne on the map and Joanne Dru was a beauty. But this is a story of a different beauty. The 1919 36x60 Red River Special double wing feeder started it’s career in the Laura Ingalls Wilder neighborhood and this morning it came to Junkshow. The 3 hour trip extricated some dust, chaff, and some coon scat.

That is a mighty heavy hauler you got to haul it.....let me guess, wasn't the weight, the. length that required dropping some serious coins for that transporter.

It was restored in the 80s by a collector in SW Minnesota. It’s been to Rollag and maybe James Valley. 18 years since the last run.

It should be operable after some compressed air and a patch in the straw fan bottom. The plan is to run it this year. What days are you here Gordy?

Our hauler is a good supportive member so I doubt he’ll bloody our nose.
This one was a bit south of Amish country a a bit too big. 3 years ago there was a very nice McCormick on a local collector auction. We budgeted $5K and never got our hand out of our pockets. The elders apparently went to the cream can.

This was less than that and a double wing Red River Special doesn’t come very often.

I forgot to mention that we took the elevator off the separator to lessen the height. That dropped us from a 14’ height to a 10’-6” height. If the pictures look off it because of that.

I’ll add a picture of a counter at the head. Mind you, this computer technology predated the turn of the century.

My grandpa and his brother bought a red river and a thrashing tractor after WWI and thrashed till the depression or a bit later when the small pull type combines put an end to all that. His brothers daughter gave me a list of his customers and the bushels he thrashed for each one. they bought the red river at Battle Creek also. I can't tell you what size it was. He had a Shepard and nickels Tractor to pull it and run it. I believe. He also had a beaner for thrashing beans. that must have been later since dad tells about pulling that through thew field if I under stood him righ as the cat would go to pushing oil out the exhaust so he would shift up a gear and idle it down so it would work a bit harder to stop the oil out the exhaust. This was all long before my time. I still have the newspaper article about it.
