reduce weight JD A

After two heart attacks and heart surgery I think I'm ready to finish the JD A build I started five years ago.Can anyone tell me where to find a cover for the rear end so I can remove the power trol? Should I go with aluminum or cast? Will the rear cover on a tractor with no lift work on a 51 model A? Thanks, A.Red

I went with aluminum from K&K antique tractors in Shelbyville, In. ( 317-398-9883 ) It cost me $236. delivered to my front door. You have to drill your holes out (no problem you can see marks where to drill) or I think they will for a small charge. Also if you're going to run a PTO you will need to have that opening machined. Not bad for the price, I was satisfied with it. Your battey box mounts just like it did on the stock unit and it cuts a lot of wieght off.

could you tell me rougly hom much weight, and does that eliminate the rock shaft and everything or just the powertrol Thanks

It eliminates the rock shaft, power-trol, and the PTO unless you need to keep the PTO. It takes off at least 100 Lbs.

I'm not sure but it seem to me removing the whole unit would knock off a couple hundred pounds. I removed one for repair once and its heavey.I'm planning on removing the whole unit, battery box,and seat.I'm planning on using a pan seat or
maby a newer style cushion seat with arms.I'm using this tractor for pulling only so I don,t need the powertrol or pto.

I have machined 2 of those aluminum caover from k&k.
You will have to mill the back side of it flat so that the gasket will seal good. You will have to drill it so that it will bolt it to the rearend. And also drill & tap it if you are using a battery box.
I also drill and bored it out for the pto shaft & bearing.

You will need the long powershaft & collar. You will need the Transmision gears to switch it over to a NON-LIVE PTO. Otherwise you pto will run the engine RPM. With that setup & 15*5*38's on pressed wheels a JD 70 will almost go 5500 lbs.
