reduction gear

I have a 49 John Deere A. How is the first reduction gear removed from shaft? All the manuals and videos just say remove it.

Your lucky if it's not loose on the spline

Thank you. I will try the puller. It's definitely not loose. I tried the puller once but I was afraid I would break something.

I'm not sure on an A, but on my G the splined shaft that held the reduction gear was a tapered splined shaft. They have a tendency to stick. Put pressure on the puller, then hit the puller with a 3 lb hammer. Hope this helps you.

Thread the nut back onto the shaft loosely before pulling the gear off. If you don't, the gear and puller will end up on the floor once it lets loose.
