Remember Hugh MacKay

I got to thinkin' as I was reading here this morning and thought...seems like it was October 23 that Hugh passed. He was a very frequent poster on the Farmall and IH board. Hugh wasn't afraid to offer his opinion, albeit at times it would stir some folks BUTT back in that day, on this site, some folks had a lot better manners. Hughie had a great knowledge of the 'off-set' IH tractors; I kinda miss that Canadian.

Rarely do I peek at YT anymore and even less this Farmall-IH forum. Back-in-the-day, there would be three pages of posts in a single day with Hugh adding topics or replies. Look at this forum now; Friday, 10/20 not a single new topic posted. So it goes and this old red iron has been fast loosing interest and value.

Enjoy ur day folks.

'old red iron has been fast loosing interest and value', yup that sure seems to be the current trend. Part of the problem, it seems to me, is cost. Used to be much easier and cheaper to ship an item across the boarder. Now there all kinds of duties, taxes, levies, fees, etc that make it prohibitive. A lot of the old scrap yards are gone too, and the younger generation can't afford 'antiques'. I'm glad in a way I sold most of my 'antique' tractors 20 years ago, the only antiques I have left are my Farmall C and some implements that are too heavy to transport. Seems like an engine shut off procedure...Slow-Choke-Off.

Hugh was driving a gravel truck for a company and picking up aggragate about 20 miles north of me. When I told him where I lived he knew right away. he dropped in to see me a couple of times. he was a big man and friendly as he was big. Cancer took him. He was a very knowledgeable guy!

I too remember him on a regular basis as he used to live up the road from me. I have also been working for the farm that bought a lot of his home farm here in NS and just a couple of weeks ago was driving a Case IH 1680 combine harvesting soybeans on part of it. I never knew him while he lived here but I did get the chance after he moved to Ontario. He very kindly showed me several of his offset tractors and we went and visited several other local collections.

I remember Hugh and Marge, we had the pleasure of visiting them once about a year before Hugh passed and he had told me then that he didn't get a good report from his doctor on his last appointment.
About a year after we were on vacation in Nova Scotia and contacted his daughter Marilyn of Windsor, NS, and she invited us for a coffee and we had a great chat about her Dad and told us were to go to see his old farm in Middle Musquodoboit, NS. We did a drive past the farm a couple days later.
Yes, Hugh had great knowledge on Farmall offsets and plows.

I only met Hugh once.

Hugh and Marge were enroute to pick up Farmall parts in western NY. They stopped in our town for a brief visit and we took them for lunch.

We found Hugh wonderfully knowledgeable and engaging. And Marge and my wife hit it off immediately (both are retired school teachers).

I snapped this photo of Hugh and Marge shortly before they continued on their journey.

He is missed.....

Hi Al,

I was just looking at the Farmall Forum which I rarely do anymore and saw your post on Hugh MacKay and just wanted to add I also have very fond memories of him. In fact I have a lot of information he shared with me on an old PC that hasn't been used now since he passed so probably of no value even if the PC would boot up.

Carol and I talk of you frequently as we had the rare opportunity to meet with you at the Albert Lee RPRU. I had my Farmall 240 fully restored and displayed at the 2015 Sedalia, Missouri RPRU with that original IH battery cover you provided as part of it's restoration. It certainly turned out nice and glad I went to all the effort in it's restoration.

My email is open if you care to send a personal response as we would certainly like to hear how you have survived the past 15 or so years. Wishing you the very best for the holiday season and the new year.

Hal and Carol Russell

Hugh made an important contribution and personality to the forum. He is missed. Jim

agree with you there Al, nowadays people are more worried about getting their feelings hurt than paying attention to the information being offered from the knowledgeable ones that are passing on. who's gonna fill their shoes. oops i forgot A .I. is on the way in this year.
