Remove steering shaft

When you remove the steering shaft from a 70 Diesel with power steering do I need to remove the bushing on the column an dose the shaft come out the back or remove the steering wheel an go forward just trying to remove the hood without getting it all scratched up. Thanks for any advice.

Steering shaft pulls out the back after disconnecting the steering shaft from the PS valve. Have had one with a real tight roll pin others not tight al all and usually secured with a wire. I usually have to remove the steering wheel to clear the seat.

Sometimes the bushing in the column stays put others come out with the shaft, not an issue either way.
