Removing Main drive assembly

I have 1056 MF50 with dual clutch. Trying to remove the main drive assembly to replace the seals around the PTO and drive shafts. Any suggestions from people who have tried this before would be greatly appreciated. Is it easy to put it back together once I get it apart?

You need to remove the live PTO driven shaft which is below the main drive shafts in order to remove the main drive shaft and quill assembly to replace the two seals. You really need a tech manual to do this job right. It isn"t that hard, but is a bit involved.

I read your earlier post and I see you have already removed the throwout bearing, etc. The reason that shaft/quill assembly won't come out is that the PTO driven gear sticks up through a slot in the quill. You have to drop that gear first. To do it, you remove the bolts that fasten the plate that is below the drive shafts you are trying to remove. You will notice two holes in the plate that are threaded. Screw a couple of bolts in those holes and tighten them to jack out the plate, which is the bearing quill for the PTO front drive shaft. Then grab hold of the shaft and pull it right out. This will allow the PTO driven gear to drop down far enough to clear the slot in the quill. Then you can pull the upper drive shaft assembly out to replace the seals. To reassemble, just put everything back in the same order. The trickiest part is working the PTO shaft back into the transmission and raising the PTO gear back up and on the shaft splines. Did many of these jobs years ago, but not in over 20 years. I think we used to replace those seals every time we did a clutch job, just in case. My first tech job was at a Massey dealer.

(quoted from post at 05:47:35 09/10/08) I read your earlier post and I see you have already removed the throwout bearing, etc. The reason that shaft/quill assembly won't come out is that the PTO driven gear sticks up through a slot in the quill. You have to drop that gear first. To do it, you remove the bolts that fasten the plate that is below the drive shafts you are trying to remove, and remove the plate. Behind the plate is the PTO driveshaft bearing quill. Remove the snap ring from the fron of the shaft, then jack the quill and bearing from the shaft using bolts in the two threaded holes in the quill. You will then see the hub of the splined PTO driven gear with an internal snap ring. Remove the snap ring and pull the shaft out. That will allow the gear to drop down enough to remove the upper drive shaft assembly to replace the 2 seals. When reassembling, put everything back together in reverse order of removal. You will have to use a bolt and a large thick washer or a piece of steel with a hole in it to pull the front PTO bearing and quill back on the shaft. Always use new gaskets if you can get them, but I think Permatex would work here because there are no bearing pre-loads to worry about.
Good luck!

Can you tell me if this same procedure applies to a MF35/4 cylinder deisel with a 2 stage clutch because I have been having the same problem trying to access the transmission seals which I would like to replace while I have got my tractor split.

Thanks ... Nick
