Removing Sherman Cable

I split my tractor to fix the flywheel starter ring gear (1948 8N) and at the same time I'm trying to replace the cable for the Sherman step-up. Does anyone know what it takes to remove the cable from the end of the Sherman selector shaft? Mine looks as though there is a nut at the end of the shaft through which the cable goes but it looks burred up to the point that it is almost round. It is about 7/16 or so, but a wrench doesn't fit it. I know I'll have to have a cable made, but I can't get the old one out and I haven't found a schematic for a cable shifter where the cable goes into the end of the shaft.

You need to remove that fitting to get the cable out. I can't remember whether it's a 1/2" or 7/16" but that's what you have to take loose. Maybe a line wrench would help. Mine came loose fairly easily and went back in just as easy.

BTW, you can get to that on an 8N without splitting the tractor - if you remove the steering box, it's open and you can get to it. Not so on the 9N/2N.

I was able to lube up my original cable and get it working. It's still not easy, especially cold, but it does still work.
