Repair Gauges - 641 Workmaster

Hey guys!

I appreciate all the education you're giving me. One thing I know i have to do is repair my gauges. I was thinking of just ordering a new temp, amp, and oil pressure. Would they originally have been black or chrome bezels? I can order either from this site's store. I'm guessing black since the tach is black.

The tach looks okay, but isn't working. I unscrewed the cable from the bottom and found the end comes off from the part that goes into the rotor. It sticks back in there and appears tight. Is it supposed to be two pieces or just a single cable? That might be the problem.

Thanks in advance!

Here is what our 641 looks like. I’m not completely certain if any of the smaller gauges are original or not. I know the proofmeter (tach) has been replaced at least once.

Its really up to you. I like the all black look. The proofmeter cable is one piece from the hydraulic pump to the meter. You can test it by taking it loose at the meter and leave itvattached atvthe pump. Start the tractor and see if the meter end spins. It wont be real fast. My pump is wallowed out so I used aluminum foil on the cable end to snug it up. Been working for several years.

Originally, the 641 had a charging lite, not a gauge. Where you have the temp gauge was the gas gauge location, so if you are looking for original, that would change your dash set up.

If you do switch back to the original fuel gauge setup, make sure the gauge matches the sender. Best to buy both from the same source. Even if the tank has a sender in it, you don't know whether it would match with the gauge you buy.

Interesting. I have a steel plug where the light would be. How does the light work?
We are talking 2 different lights here. The big plug between the gauges is the dash light. Under the fuel gauge where you have the temp gauge should be a charge indicator light, there was no ammeter. At least that how it is in mine. Mine is a 1962 641.

Dan… I thought you might find the attached page out of the parts book interesting. For both gauge locations and proofmeter drive.

Do you know if your tractor has a place for a fuel sending unit?

I just replaced my proofmeter with a new one from Steiner's. Reasonably priced, but I wish I paid more for a higher quality part. It took three tries to get a working meter. It's now at like 8 hours and seems to be working but the first one only clocked up one hour then stopped rolling hours. The second one had the needle get stuck in the middle of the meter at just above idle speed and never dropped back down. It's from India and the quality control appears lacking. Looks alright appearance wise and as long as it keeps working I am happy enough with it. Nothing on Steiner on this one, they were good about replacing them and I'm sure there aren't a ton of manufacturers where you can easily pick a better quality.

I was thinking about ordering a bunch of stuff from Steiner, but this is good info. How did the return and replacement process with them go?

Question... If I go to back to the OEM for a '58 641 it will be the fuel gauge, the temp gauge, oil pressure gauge and proof meter. I will lose the amp gauge which was probably installed when they did the 12v conversion - maybe. I have a steel plug where the amp light should go. My question is... how does that light work?
