How far down into the battery does the lead from a top post go?

If you Google 'Repairing a battery top post' the results are all 'cut it off, put a mold on it, melt lead and pour a new post' .

But if the lead runs deep enough, could you cut off the boogered up post, then drill and tap for one of those side post adapters, like the pic?

Curious minds want to know.

Your econd solution sounds possible, the first one I think is a longshot. Bonding between the original part and the new poured post would be almost impossible I think. Just my two cents ....

Agreed. And I don't think all (if any) of those adapters pictured are for a starter load. They often just say for charging.

Lead would go down from the post to the first set of plates. Yes, I think you can, cut off old, drill and tap, turn in new correct size post. I have even poured a new post using the cardboard post protectors of the correct size. Put a wood screw into the cut off lead post, poured new lead around it, works great. Either way, you are saving the use of a good battery.

I have repaired damaged posts with the melted lead method. I don't cut off the post but rather clean it up shiny and use a tin mold around the old post. Basically filling in the damaged part while retaining the strength of the original post.

Be careful- the gases given off by a battery are EXPLOSIVE-as in like a grenade! I would just get another battery myself, and be safer. Mark.

If I were doing this, I would use a brass wood screw.

I've re-purposed side post batteries with these adapters in vehicles and tractors several times with no i'll effects and would use in a heart beat if there is enough post. Do not know how far the post goes into the battery though.
