Replaceing the rings in a john deere B

If the exhaust and water pipes are removed can the cyl. head be moved forward enough to slide the pistons and rods out the front of the block ? This would be a lot quicker than having to remove the hood, gas tank and fan shaft. Can this be done without removing the manifold ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If you really want to they will actually come out the back
without pulling the head! Not knowing any better thats how I
took my first one out as a kid the crankshaft was messed up.
At least on an unstyled one they can come out of the
crankcase hole where the breather pipe is with the connecting
rods just pull the spark plugs so you can spin it freely

But doing that how do you get them back in ?

Head will come out without removing the hood or fan shaft. Remove the head studs and rotate it sideways, then tip it towards the clutch side and it will come
out. Have taken them out off a G that way so a B should be easier. Don't know how you could get them out of the crankcase hole as was suggested. Not that
much room in there. Still wouldn't be able to get them back in even if you could.

Thanks guy I didn't see how I could possible work a ring squeezer down in there.

Yeah blue cheap spring compressor fits down there if you
want to use it. Again as a 14 year old kid I did just use my
fingers to carefully pop them in with the new rings careful to
not line them up i at least knew that much. It went pretty slick.
Theres a lot of room really if you rotate the crank to the right
spot. You still have to open this hole and take the caps off the
rods anyway...just saying if he doesnt want to pull the head
and this is all he wants to do it makes this project go fairly
fast. He can even measure the bore if he likes and inspect it if
he has a borescope or can borrow one

how do you plan on honing the bores ? How do you plan on preventing the top ring from being broken on the ridge ? Have you measured the bore diameter and taper ? Is this a parade only tractor ?
