replacing a pto shaft

Stuff the nose in a ditch or back it up a set of
ramps. Keep the fluid forward.
Pull the 4 bolts, slide it out, install the new one.

(quoted from post at 15:02:38 02/09/14) I need a new pto shaft in my TE 20 just wondering how difficult the job is.

It's a lot easier than replacing a starter, Scott!

Seriously, I was able to replace the PTO shaft in my TO-20 without any trouble.

I used the unit with the shaft, bearing and seals, already assembled. Drained the fluid, took out four bolts, and the old shaft slid right out.

I understand that if the splines are damaged/twisted, it can be a bear, but I didn't have that problem.

John (UK) has an excellent set of instructions for the job. (And every other job, for that matter.)

If you have the old original 1 1/8" spline shaft, they are unavailable. New shafts all have 1 3/8" splines.

(Did I get the dimensions correct - all from memory!)

What the others said. If it seems stuck when you
begin to pull it, you can hook something to it,
like the shaft off a mower, to help you pull with
more leverage. I have found draining a little
fluid and then using the ditch method works fine to
keep from draining it all.
