Replacing points on 1020

Hello again:

I have a JD 1020 gas 135ci. In a fit of dyslexia, I ordered a tune up kit (points, rotor, condenser) for a 2010.

On the back of the package it says "for early JD, 4 or 6 cyl".

So, I do the math and divide 6 by 2 and get three, as in cylinders. Does anyone know if this kit will work with my tractor?

I would guess it would depend on which 2010 kit you got. The later model 2010 tractors had a Wico DB dist. that uses the same parts as the 1020 and the early ones had a Delco dist. If in fact it"s the early kit, I"m afraid it won"t work. The "Tractor Parts" page here at YT has some good info if you need stuff like that answered.

Thanks for the fast reply.

All I know about our tractor's distributor is that it has the clip on cap, not the screw on cap, and that this kit is for a "Delco w/clip held cap".

Does this info help you to make any further suggestions?

I doubt it's going to work. I've never seen a 1020 with a Delco distributor. Both of mine have Prestolite. Same with my neighbor's 350 crawler and 300 industrial wheel tractor (both have the same 135 gas engines).

1010s and 2010s came with four different distributors and all used different points. Made by Wico, Prestolite, and Delco. As I recall, the points and condensor for the 1010/2010 tractors with Prestolite are the same as used in 1020s. Not the Delco version though.

My 1010 has the Delco clip-on cap version distributor and takes the same points and condensor as my Case DC tractor.

By the way, I had to pick up points and condensor in a hurry a few weeks ago for a 1020 with the Presolite distributor. NAPA had them in stock, on the shelf.

WHY don't you walk the kit over to the tractor and get a "visual" on how the parts match up?

If you can't do that, HOW can you expect a bunch of guessers on the internet to decide for you?

Also, you can go the jdparts.com and open the parts catalogs for both tractor and see how many overlapping options there are for points (etc) between the two tractors.

Take the old points to the dealership, NAPA or whomever and match them up.Deere chose to use more than one distributor manufacturer in case of one or more going on strike. It was a different time than today's world.

if they look the same or very similar in appearance they will work
fine. theres nothing special about points almost every set ive seen
be it from a car truck or tractor are interchangeable. there ARE
different ones, but they all work the same in principle. So u just
need them to fit & they'll function properly.

To my honorable 1020 sensei:

My many mistakes are testament to my many ignorance. Your wisdom, generosity and irritability are taken with humility and gratitude.

Grasshopper apologizes for my extreme ignorance, which cause me to excluding important information. As wise man once said, sometimes we do not know what we do not know.

Grasshopper also apologize for not having 1020 here in office to observe and compare, stupidly leaving it at humble farm far far away.

In future, will endeavor to earn your respect.

About some of the confusion mentioned. There is none with the Deere three cylinder gas engines that I know of.

All the 135 engines used in 350 crawlers, 380 forklifts, 1020 ag wheel tractors, and 300 industrial wheel tractors . . . used only Prestolite distributors and all use the same points and condensors. To my knowledge, Deere never used any Delco distributors on 3 cylinder engines. Only exception might be what they sell now as new replacements. I know that Delco made some three since my Hercules three-cylinder engine has a Delco distributor.

The "confusion" is with other model Deere tractors with 4s and 6s; NOT the three-bangers.

Regardless of which specific Prestolite model #, they all take:

Points Deere # AT21062 NAPA # ECH CS729A

Capacitor Deere # AT14684 NAPA # ECH AL869 and MPE AL869SB (much cheaper)

Only slight confustion in the past is . . . there used to be a choice of buying points and condensor separately, or . . . buying the entire breaker plate with points and condensor mounted on it (no longer available).

Your Prestolite distributor is one of these and all use the same tune-up parts:
1BT4301B, C, or D, or later # 200627

Wow, to all of you, thanks for the insight. I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge. Hope I can return the favor someday, somehow.

Regards,

Joe O
